About The Competence Framework

Haverin Consulting and our founder Stuart Miller are strong believers that every area of business and personal performance needs an awareness and insight into the Competence Framework required for success. Often lack of understanding of what factors it will take to succeed reduces the opportunity for organizations or individuals to achieve that success.

But what is the Competence Framework? You will find lots of comprehensive definitions and it is often associated in research in recent years with Human Resource work done around job profiles and the requirements for different level roles in companies. Looked at more broadly it is the requirements for any individual (or team) to be successful in performing a given set of tasks, projects and executing strategies.

Put simply it is comprised of three elements:

Knowledge

Knowledge

All knowledge including education from school through college, professional, job related and learning acquired through specific skills acquisition.  Education from broader general knowledge and hobbies will also impact performance.

Skills

Skills

Specific skills, techniques, tools and methodologies acquired over time.  These can be job, task or context specific or more general in nature. Experience allows you to adapt and flex skills.

Experience

Experience

The application of knowledge and skills in different specific situations over time.  The more varied the situations and context the greater the ability to apply experience as a modifier the next time a challenge is met.

Each of these requirements will be different depending on the role and function required to achieve success in the area of competence performance.  That’s why our HR colleagues invest so much effort in this area.  These competences, however, will be different for any given objective, environment and set of circumstances.  Over time (or a career) different competences will be needed and recognizing the gaps is a critical adaptation skills for an executive in their career.

Failing to adapt and adopt new knowledge and skills, or attaining and applying different experience, results in the following well known analogy.

Now if every problem actually is a nail, the manager will continue to be successful and become deeply experienced and knowledgeable in the different materials and nail types and sizes needed.  When the problem changes, or is more complex, suddenly that well experienced skill become less effective or even damaging (think installing window glass!)

The Haverin Consulting logo exemplifies the blending of these three areas to define competence and we apply the principle of the Competence Framework to our consulting and coaching practices.  We encourage our clients to pursue awareness of the Competence Framework deficits they may have and develop strategies for overcoming them in their strategies for business and personal improvement.
